HOW BIG IS THE PROBLEM?

Needlestick injuries make up more than 80% of all percutaneous exposure incidents in the United States.[1][3]

It is estimated that there are 3.5 million needlestick injuries each year. These estimates are considered low, as it is estimated that half of all occupational needlestick injuries are not reported.[14][15]

Workers are often obligated to report the incident as per the facility’s protocol regarding occupational safety. However, in the United States, approximately half of all needlestick injuries affecting health care workers are not reported, citing the long reporting process and its interference with work as their reason for not reporting an incident.
